An overview of Guardians of the Galaxy
Guardians of the Galaxy starring Chris Pratt (Peter Quill/Star Lord), David Bautista (Drax the
Destroyer), Bradley Cooper (Rocket Raccoon), Zoe Saldana (Gamora) and Groot (Vin Diesel)
debuted worldwide on August 1, 2014. It was directed by James Gunn and is a Marvel adaptation
film—the guys that brought the global blockbuster franchises of Thor, Iron Man, Captain America
and Avengers. Trailers raised expectation from people the day it was shown in cinemas weeks before
the actual screening. Today, after a month of its release in the cinemas, Guardians of the Galaxy has
received an overall positive feedback from its viewers. It got a rating of 92% in Rotten Tomatoes and
reflected a booming 95% audience who liked it. Truly, a Marvel film must be very pressuring to
make because viewers hope to see well, a Marvel film: a rich, original movie, full of what it needs
(sound effects, a power cast, full graphic experience, and an adaptation so close to the story it does
not appear like any other franchise).
The story is about Peter Quill stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, where he finds himself in
a relentless bounty hunt. Ronan is a powerful villain who aims to threaten or shake the entire
universe. During the process of Quill evading Ronan, he meets a quartet of unruly misfits—Rocket
the Raccoon, Groot, the character who resembles a tree but acts as a human, the sexy Gamora, who
looks like the princess from Avatar, and Drax the Destroyer, most commonly known as The Rock
(David Bautista). Finally, when Quill discovered the know-how of the orb, he decides it best to rally
his rival and protect the orb from getting into the wrong hands.
Aside from being packed with an all-star cast, what worked in the movie was:
The production it took for the film to turn into reality; punch lines from unusual characters were
thrown, which was nonetheless, a humor anybody could use and a diversion from the monotonous
science fiction concept of the movie; Casts played their roles well, and a personal favorite would be
Vin Diesel. Despite being a humanoid tree, his voice never failed to animate his character, which
might seem unsuitable at first but really, is very fitting and works well with who he is in the movie;
James Gunn and Marvel also shared an open relationship with each other that made the making of the
movie lighter despite James Gunn’s theory of saying that this movie is “big and fast, slow and long”.
They have differences in ideas but their openness worked hand-in-hand with each other and made it
an overall wonderful experience.
What didn’t work for the movie though, was:
· At first, it was thought of as an obscure title, but it was then revamped into a fun comic book,
which finally made sense.
The good scenes in the movie were: the action packed parts every kid was looking forward to. The
characters, though damaged, still managed to appear the protagonists they were. The plot was clear to
the audience in the way to movie was made. A specific example of this is the Kyln prison escape.
Rocket the Raccon was the genius behind their escape. He planned everything and when he finally
managed to be successful in their escape, the way the scene was executed left the audience breathless.
This movie, however, still raised eyebrows among onlookers regarding these matters: there was a fair
amount of nudity, profanity, sex and violence during the entire film; the protagonists are shady
characters who appear damaged and disparaged; there was a general lack of values, like the scene
where Rocket saw Stan Lee cheating on his wife with a younger woman, and just shrugs off the issue
and calls Stan Lee a Pervert. Another specific scene where the movie may deem lacking is the
introduction scene, where Peter Quill steals the orb. The execution of that scene left a lot to be
desired.
Then there is the music, which includes 29 tracks from the original score; a lot to incorporate in a
movie but is nonetheless successful in keeping the film free from dead air. What is still etched in my
mind was the song “Hooked on a Feeling”, which was played on the trailer too. This song played a
large part in making sure this movie will be remembered for a long time to come. It was quirky
strategy to associate something upbeat in a sci-fi movie, but it worked out well in this case.
This movie has its ups and downs. Everyone cannot be pleased, but this movie will please a large part
of its viewers.
